Madrid, July 2015 - The Spanish Dental Association together with its affiliated Scientific Societies and the Conference of Deans of Dentistry, have reached the first agreement to jointly request to the Ministries of Education and Health the creation of official specialties in Dentistry.
The agreement was reached at a meeting held in July 16, which was attended by Dr. Óscar Castro, President of the Spanish Dental Association, Dr. Esteban Brau, Chairman of the Specialties Committee of the Association, Dr. José Carlos de la Macorra, President of the Conference of Deans of Dentistry, and a representation of the Scientific Societies formed by the Presidents of SECIB, SEDO, SEPES (Drs. David Gallego, Ángel Alonso and Juan Ignacio Rodriguez, respectively), as well as the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of SEPA, Dr. Miguel Carasol. There, they agreed on a document containing the basis for the creation of the specialties in Dentistry which will soon be transferred to the Ministries of Health and Education.
Thus, the Spanish Dental Association, the University and the Scientific Societies seek to equate the Spanish official qualifications with the rest of the member countries of the European Union, ensuring equal access to specialized training. This document is a historical and priority claim for the Spanish Dentistry and aims to improve the training of professionals and the healthcare services offered to patients.
The creation of official specialties must be conducted in accordance with EU regulations and Spanish law and will not affect the competence of graduates in Dentistry, or the access to training or professional development activities.
